Description
A dry mustard is when the mustard seed is ground up (may also be called ground mustard or mustard powder).
Mustard seeds are the small round seeds that come from several different types of mustard plants. Mustard seeds are harvested from three different plants: white mustard (better known in this country as yellow mustard), brown mustard, and the elusive black mustard.
Did you know?
The phrase to “cut the mustard” or to excel, is an All-American saying dating back to the early 1900’s when it was published in a Texas newspaper by writer O Henry. There are many theories as to why he “mustered” up this saying. Some say it’s because mustard is originally named for it’s use of grape juice, which is known as must, and we all know grapes are superior because they provide us with the heavenly nectar known as wine. Others say it is a take on the military saying to “pass muster”. And others yet say it is a version of the British saying “sharp as mustard” or “keen as mustard”, which is a play on the condiment’s zing of flavor.
Either way you look at it…Mustard is literally awesome sauce!
