Description
Red Pepper Flakes are from the species Capsicum annuum. This is a member of the Solanaceae family (also known as night shades). In the US, red pepper flakes and Parmesan cheese have become as common in pizza parlors and Italian style restaurants as salt and pepper. As a former pizzeria owner I’m also partial to a shake of red pepper. Red Pepper Flakes often include all parts of the pepper : the outer skins, the veins (the hottest part of any chile) and the seeds. Not just for pizza, these hot little flakes add the perfect amount of heat in just a pinch! Add a dash of flavor to any dish with these spicy flakes.
Our Red Pepper Flakes are Birdseye chiles, Capsicum frutescens. They are culivated in India where these dark red colored chile peppers are dried and crushed. We consider our Red Pepper Flakes to be a hot chile with their heat level tipping the scales at 30,000-35,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units).
Fun Fact: Make your own hot honey by simply adding red pepper flakes to honey. Let it sit for a few days so the pepper can marinate the honey. I also love to add a generous amount to a bottle of olive oil for a spicy cooking oil. DIY saves you money and always tastes better. Also makes great gifts!
Comes in a half cup jar (1.5 oz)
